Raising A Reader San Francisco and Alameda Counties empowers families to build one of the simplest and yet most transformative of regular routines: daily book-sharing.

At the heart of our program is a partnership with families and educators that fosters the delight that comes with reading, and reinforces the central role of families in helping their young children enter school loving books and ready to learn.

The red Raising A Reader book bag forms the cornerstone of our program.  Each week in San Francisco and Alameda Counties, children take home a bright red bag, filled with high-quality, developmentally appropriate, multilingual and multicultural children’s books.  This simple routine, sustained weekly by the educators and caregivers who implement the program, is the key to engaging families in the joyful practice of daily book-sharing: a practice that fosters early brain development, strengthens social and emotional development, builds early literacy skills, and ensures that children enter kindergarten ready to learn.

We are committed to empowering the people who have the most impact on each child, and as an evidence-based early literacy intervention Raising A Reader does much more than just give families books; we provide comprehensive programming that supports families and educators to help each child reach their full potential.
